Indian-inspired textiles: Thomas Wardle and the Leek Embroidery Society

Using silk yarns and Japanese gold thread on Indian tussur silks block printed by her husband, Mrs Elizabeth Wardle and the Leek Embroidery Society created a beautiful range of embroidered textiles from c 1880 for church and domestic use. Our two-hour workshop consists of a short introduction about the Wardles followed by stitch tuition on a small sample of contemporary hand-block printed Indian cotton using Mrs Wardle’s repertoire of stitching techniques including long and short, back, stem, buttonhole, French knot and couching.
